Tactical data links provide information superiority

In critical situations, information superiority can be essential, saving your life as well as others. One means of achieving this superiority is to use the most advanced data links, i.e. ensure that the communication between aircraft, command centres and other information sources etc. functions optimally.

Saab pioneered the development of tact...

ical data links for combat aircraft. This took place as early as the mid 1950s in connection with the development of Saab's Draken aircraft. Back then, it was mainly about sharing information between the aircraft and command centre.

That was followed by the development of the Viggen combat aircraft, with a data link that allowed information to be shared directly between aircraft, something that was way ahead of its time. It was in fact almost 10 years before the USA and Russia could unveil similar systems. Today, after a further 40 years of development, the possibilities with data links are considerably greater.

See the enemy while remaining invisible

In air each Gripen aircraft is permanently in contact with command centres and other Gripen fighters via data links that relay information automatically. Each Gripen pilot knows the whereabouts of his other squadron members and what they are seeing on their radar. The combination of radar and data link therefore provides the Gripen pilot with superior aware...

ness of the situation.

The data link also allows enemy aircraft to be seen while remaining invisible to them. By using target data that is linked automatically from other Gripen aircraft, the pilot is able to act without being visible on the opponent’s radar, with the tactical advantages this entails. The same tactics can be used against targets on land and at sea. Target data from one Gripen aircraft can be relayed to another group of attacking Gripen aircraft that remain invisible on the opponent’s radar.

Based on a superior situational awareness, the Gripen formations step by step maneuver to a tactical advantage.

Gripen - the most modern fighter in service

Gripen Next Generation (NG) is a fully NATO-interoperable multi-role fighter tailored for the future Network Centric Warfare (NCW) environment. Gripen NG will meet the demanding operational requirements of the 21st century air forces and its unrivalled multi-role capability provides excellent tactical flexibility.

Advanced data communications, dual da...

ta links, satellite communications and video links – coupled with enhanced range and endurance due to increased fuel capacity and increased thrust from its powerful General Electric F414G turbofan engine, make Gripen NG the ideal independent fighter of choice. Gripen NG offers outstanding agility and high instantaneous turn rates providing unrivalled performance in close combat. On-board sensors, in combination with HMD/NVG, deliver the ability to detect and destroy a wide variety of targets, even at night or in poor weather conditions.

Gripen NG flying with high performance AESA radar

The Gripen NG test aircraft is now flying with a SELEX Galileo Raven ES-05 AESA radar installed, following extensive testing with an earlier AESA prototype.
Raven ES-05 is a high performance Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) fire control radar designed for the Saab Gripen NG multi role fighter that builds on over 60 years of SELEX Galileo...

’s fire control radar experience. It has been designed in close collaboration with Saab and is a vital part of the Gripen next generation multi functional sensor system.

The sensor suite includes active and passive sensors, integrated for central sensor command and sensor fusion. This will significantly increase the multirole capability and sensor performance against future threats and more complex scenarios.
